In 2009, an estimated 1,479,350 Americans were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,340 died from the disease. Billions of dollars are spent on health care costs each year by individuals, the health care industry, and federal, state, and local governments. Cancer has emotional and physical costs as well. It affects everyone involved from the patient to family members, friends, and coworkers.
